Review of Supercharged Science E-Science Online Learning Program

What a blessing it was to have the opportunity to review Supercharged Science for the Schoolhouse Review Crew as I had the opportunity to use their E-science Online Learning Program in my home school.  Supercharged Science was developed by Al and Aurora Lipper, 10 years ago with the goal of educating and inspiring kids and educators through their e-science program.  This program shows kids how to do amazing experiments that get them excited about science.

With Supercharged Science everything is laid out for you to jump right in and start having fun.  First, you choose from nearly 20 topics ranging from Life Science, Thermodynamics, Biology, Chemistry, Electronics and many more and then you watch the videos provided, read the material on the area of study and begin the fun part: EXPERIMENTS!  Aurora walks you through the experiments in a concise and easy to understand manner.  There are also tests provided if you want to track your student’s knowledge, with the answers provided.  If you run into a problem…it’s NO PROBLEM!  You can email Aurora, or your kids can, and she will get right back to you with an explanation.

I used this program with my 2nd and 4th grade sons.  We chose to study Life Science.  Our plan looked like this.  On day one we would read the new material and watch any videos available on what we were going to be focusing on.

The next day we would watch the videos and decide on 1 or 2 we wanted to do that day.  After watching the video, we felt confident to gather our supplies and then do the experiment on our own.  After we set up the experiment, the boys would illustrate in their Science Journal what we had done and any pertinent information. Since they are young, we would discuss the new terms they were learning.

The 3rd day of the week, we would follow up on our experiments, examining what had taken place, making sure to illustrate the changes the experiment caused.  Then my boys would beg to do 1 or 2 more experiments that day as well.  On the fourth day of the week we would again check the results of our experiments and record the data.

Even as I sit here on a Saturday afternoon, my 4th grade son is drawing a mural of the different types of cells he has learned about…just for fun!  Throughout the week they have both been using terms such as “osmosis, cell walls, photosynthesis, mitosis” and such in their regular daily conversations!  Little scientists.

I have to make them stop choosing experiments, because we have to move onto another subject.  Even if the experiment is more complex and involves things we do not have, they enjoy watching Aurora demonstrate and then explain the experiment. I will also be using this with my older daughter, who spends most days in bed due to a debilitating chronic illness, so that at least she can watch the experiments in this manner as well.
