Blessings

“Blessings,”  by Laura Story, has become one of my favorite songs.  As a mama of two teenage daughters that battle chronic illness daily, Dysautonomia in the form of Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), these lyrics touch me deeply.  God has been our strength as we have faced the minute by minute challenges of this illness for the past 11 years.  We continue to pray for complete healing, but know that His will for our lives is perfect and that there is so much more to His plan for us on this earth than we can ever understand.

We never imagined Katie, who was terrified beyond imagine at shots in general, to be able to handle 6 injections in her head (she sand “Amazing Grace” in her head while doing so).  It took Megan 9 years to be well enough to ride a bike!  2013-03-21 13.55.01 Moms phone 2011-2012 402

Yes, in my mamaness, I would prefer my girls to be healthy, but as a daughter of the King, I see the many ways that He has tenderly cared for us, strengthened us beyond that which we could have ever imagined and held us close, growing our faith to a point where it would probably not be, if not for this illness in our lives.  When you look upon them, you would never know the intense trials they have faced, because this is an invisible illness.  But knowing them, you would be able to see a reflection of His strength at work in their lives♥  If your children were playing with their younger brothers on the playground, they would never know that my sons have only known a life watching their sisters’ live out life with chronic illness and the ways He has shaped and molded my boys by this invisible illness as well.  They are caring, helpful and self sacrificing because this has all they have known.  But yet perhaps if they seem a little off it is because earlier that day they watched their sisters battle.

I believe we all face an invisible illness of some sort and that He WILL use it for good, but much grace is needed by all of us toward each other as our days and lives intertwine.  We do not know the battles faced just minutes before our paths cross.

“Blessings”

We pray for blessings, we pray for peace
Comfort for family, protection while we sleep
We pray for healing, for prosperity
We pray for Your mighty hand to ease our suffering
And all the while, You hear each spoken need
Yet love us way too much to give us lesser things

‘Cause what if your blessings come through rain drops
What if Your healing comes through tears
What if a thousand sleepless nights are what it takes to know You’re near
What if trials of this life are Your mercies in disguise

We pray for wisdom, Your voice to hear
We cry in anger when we cannot feel You near
We doubt your goodness, we doubt your love
As if every promise from Your word is not enough
And all the while, You hear each desperate plea
And long that we’d have faith to believe

‘Cause what if your blessings come through rain drops
What if Your healing comes through tears
What if a thousand sleepless nights are what it takes to know You’re near
What if trials of this life are Your mercies in disguise

When friends betray us
When darkness seems to win
We know that pain reminds this heart
That this is not,
This is not our home
It’s not our home

‘Cause what if your blessings come through rain drops
What if Your healing comes through tears
What if a thousand sleepless nights are what it takes to know You’re near

What if my greatest disappointments or the aching of this life
Is the revealing of a greater thirst this world can’t satisfy
What if trials of this life
The rain, the storms, the hardest nights
Are your mercies in disguise

  1. sniffle…that is beautiful. We know his blessings do come in the rain, and in our pain, and in our times of need. What a sweet reminder to me today. Thank you.

  2. It is so amazing and beautiful to have seen Megan and Katie overcome their weaknesses and let this illness strengthen them, and to see the boys grow more mature each day, even as they watch their sisters go through such hardships.
You guys are such a blessing!
