Through the Homeschool Review Crew, I had the past month to use the A+ Interactive Math 2nd Grade online math program from A+ TutorSoft, Inc. with my son. The lessons are multimedia, using audio, visual and text. The program provides interactive worksheets and exams, as well as printable worksheets for more practice. Students are able to track their own progress with the online progress report.
The student has their own account they can access, choose the lesson they are on (see the list of lessons on the left side of the screen above), watch a lesson and then complete an interactive question and answer lesson. Throughout the lessons, there are questions for the student to answer aloud. Unfortunately, there is not enough time given for the student to respond with their answer, before the online “teacher” says “great job” (or some other positive reinforcement type phrase) and then gives the answer. This was frustrating for my son.
The course is a comprehensive, 32 week math course. The content of each course is designed to meet and even exceed both state and core standards. There is a separate parent area to record the student’s daily lesson scores and track their progress. They offer parental controls to lock the solutions, as well as progress reports to isolate strengths ans weaknesses.
We have used 3 other online math programs over the past 11 years of home educating 4 children. I think that if A+ TutorSoft, Inc. were to incorporate a more child friendly look it would add to the overall feel of the program, enhancing the student friendly aspect. When I first went on the website, I was overwhelmed by the amount of information in one place and had some difficulty locating what I was looking for. A simplified home page could make this task easier.
Most of the lessons required quite a bit of reading, and for my son, who is 7, but a late reader, it made math frustrating for him. I always sit beside him anyway, but usually I can get him started on his math practice and away he goes. I had to help him with most of the lessons and interactive sessions, as quite a few answers had not just number answers, but phrases attached to them. Though the “teacher” read them out loud, they were often times so wordy that one would have to be able to read in order to choose the correct answer. I think it would be easy to add kid friendly icons to solve some of the issues for less advanced readers: “click on the yellow star to begin your lesson.” I also found the extra step of having to go back to the parent site to see what lesson he needed to do tedious. The lessons are numbered on the students page as “3.1, 3.2, 3.3…etc” It would be nice if perhaps they had a check mark next to them so we would know right away they had been completed, perhaps my son would have then been able to begin his next lesson independently. If your children are strong readers, than you would probably not have any of these issues, but for our family it wasn’t the best fit.
The good news is that they offer a one month free trial period for home schoolers to take advantage A+ Student MATH online and if you find that A+ TutorSoft, Inc. is a good fit for your children, they have a few payment options:$19.95 per month, $49.99 per quarter, or a full year for $124.99. Or you can purchase the entire 32 weeks in an Interactive Math CD Software format starting at $79.99. We also have the privilege of sharing with you a code to receive 50% off of your purchases through A+ TutorSoft, Inc. When making your purchase use the code SPOFFER50 for 50% OFF!!!
